Directions

1. Connect a MIDI keyboard or other MIDI device to your computer
2. If you have not already done so, download a copy of the Music Shop demo from the CD to your disk (see below).
3. Open the application by double-clicking on the file "Music Shop 2.0.2" within the Opcode folder of your Start Menu
4. Spend a moment reading the "General Overview" and the "Special Features" files. Each of these provides more information about Music Shop. The "Quick Tutorial" would be good to read as a follow-up to Project 13.
5. Run the OMS Application found in the Opcode Folder on your machine.

 

Setting Up Your Software and Hardware with OMS (Open Music System)

The following setup issues are important for Project 13:
• MIDI Management. As with all of the MIDI-based software for Windows computers that we have included on the EMT-CD, we assume from the start that you have installed the proper MIDI Drivers that are necessary for your machine and for your particular kind of MIDI hardware interface. We include suggestions for installing MIDI drivers in the file MIDI Management for Windows Machines. Click on this link if you need help in verifying that the drivers are in place.

 
• MIDI Setup. Opcode includes with its Sequencers a MIDI Setup application called "OMS Setup."  You will need to use this program to setup your MIDI "studio" to assign MIDI In's/Out's.  If you do not have external MIDI devices you may navigate to the OMS Setup icon found in the Opcode folder and double-click on "OMS Setup."  If you do have external MIDI devices (i.e.  Patchbays, keyboards, modules, etc...) be sure to turn them on before running OMS Setup so that OMS can automatically locate them.  Once the application is open OMS will search for any available OMS studio setups.  If it doesn't find one it will then try to create one for you.  If for some reason it does not, use these steps below to create a studio setup.

 

Go to File =>New Studio Setup or hit Ctrl+N.

The next window that comes up will ask you whether or not you wish OMS to Auto-detect MIDI Devices.  This is always a good idea to let OMS automatically do it.  Make sure there is a check mark next to the "Auto-detect MIDI devices and click "OK."
 

After OMS has finished searching for MIDI devices it will offer a list of devices it found similar to the window shown to the left.  The setup to the left shows that OMS found a soundcard device, a MIDI interface with nothing connected to it, and a MIDI patchbay/interface with several devices connected to it. You may add devices to your studio setup at anytime using the New Studio Setup option. Save the Studio setup and Test your studio setup by hitting Ctrl+T or by by choosing Test Studio under the Studio Menu in OMS.

Be sure to read the OMS Manual thoroughly.  What was given here only scratches the surface of OMS' potential.  The Opcode website also contains PDF versions of the OMS, Music Shop, and Vision manuals as well as various Tech Support manuals designed to help with troubleshooting.

Once created, Music Shop will use this studio setup as the "device list."  Both Music Shop and Vision will automatically share one studio setup.  There is no need to create separate studio setups for each program. However, you do have the option of creating more than one studio setup and using one setup for Music Shop and the other for Vision.  Bear in mind that OMS works only with Opcode Software and other programs will require setups within the respective programs.  For help with setting up MIDI patchbays, Thru Switchers, or more complex Studio setups consult the manuals that came with OMS and your MIDI hardware.
