Getting Started with

the Alesis QS Series Keyboard

Before getting started, it is important to understand the modes in which the Alesis QS Series Keyboards are designed to work. The QS has 3 primary modes of operation: Program mode, General MIDI, and Multi Mode.

"Program mode": is the mode by which you test individual voices.

"General MIDI mode": is the mode by which you have multi-timbral capabilities using the General MIDI standard patches.

"Multi (Mix) mode": is the mode by which you have multi-timbral capabilities without using General MIDI.

To enter Program Mode (auditioning voices): Press the [Program] button under Play Mode. Then select a bank using the double-digit number pads ( ie ... [00] /Piano) to the right of the [Program] button. (to cycle through all the banks use the [<Bank] and [Bank>] buttons). Select individual voices using the single-number buttons ( [0] ) below the double-digit buttons.

To enter General MIDI mode (multi GM): Press the [Edit Select] button under Edit Mode. Then press the [Bank>]/Global button to enter the global edit mode of the keyboard. Press the [Page>] button until you reach a page in the LCD that reads: "General MIDI:ON" or "General MIDI: OFF". Use the [Value Up/Down] buttons until the value reads ON. You are now in GM mode and ready to work.

To enter Multi (Mix) mode: Follow the steps for setting GM ON. However, this time you wish to keep General MIDI in the OFF position. After GM is OFF, press the [Mix] button under the Play Mode. Cycle through the banks by using the [<Bank] and [Bank>] buttons until the display reads, "Multitmbrl". You are now in multi mode and free of the GM restrictions.
